Title IX: The Journey Continues
selected story
"Sister, Sister"
Venus Williams won her fifth ladies singles title at The All England Club, defeating little sister Serena in the process. Venus, who was defending her 2007 title, had previously lost both Wimbledon finals she had played against Serena.
Despite the ever-present conspiracy theorists, the match provided riveting, hard-hitting tennis. While Serena appeared to command the match early in the firrst set, Venus charged back, playing agressively to challenge her sister. The windy conditions caused Venus some issues with her serve but she did manage to serve the fastest serve by a woman throughout the entire fortnight, 129 MPH.
Their mother was in the players' box, rooting for both daughters but father Richard flew home before the match saying "his work was done" with both daughters reaching the Finals.
Later in the day, the sisters partnered to win the ladies' doubles championship, their seventh Grand Slam title and third doubles title at Wimbledon.
