The White House Celebrates the Title IX Anniversary

To celebrate the  37th anniversary of the Title IX legislation, the White House has created a blog for individulas impacted by Title IX to post their sports photos.  For the initial blog post, UN Ambassador Susan Rice talks about how Title IX helped shape her as a person.  She shares a picture of herself from those days, and asks all women athletes to share their photos for a celebration at WhiteHouse.gov on Tuesday, June 23rd.

Also as a part of the festivities, The White House held a Title IX roundtable to discuss current issues surrounding Title IX.  The session was hosted by Valerie Jarrett, President Obama's Senior advisor, and included Sec. of Education Arne Duncan, Billie Jean King and Olympic gymnast and past president of the Women's Sports Foundation, Dominique Dawes.  This discussion came against the backdrop of a study released on June 23rd by the College Sports Council showing 12,000 more athletic scholarships are available for females than males in sports played by both men and women. The College Sports Council, whose executive director Eric Pearson is featured in the "License to Thrive" film, is an advocacy group that monitors the impact of the Title IX legislation on men's sports.
