En route to the winning the NCAA Div. 1 Women's Basketball championship for the second straight year, the UConn women's basketball team won 78 games in a row, breaking a record set by a prior UConn squad seven years ago. UConn beat a determined Stanford team 53-47 to win the title.
UConn surpassed its own mark set from Nov. 9, 2001, to March 11, 2003. Until the championship game against Stanford, the Lady Huskies have won every single game over the last two seasons by at least ten points. Their average margin of victory was 34 points.
UConn (39-0) is the first women's team to have consecutive unbeaten seasons. With a 78-game win streak, the latest victory put them within 10 games of the 88-game streak set by the UCLA men's basketball team in the 1970's, coached by legendary coach John Wooden.
