Freedom's Sisters

Freedom's Sisters

Freedom's  Sisters, an exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center, looks to highlight the critical role of women in the Civil Rights Movement.  Made possible by a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund, the exhibit is a collaboration between the Smithsonian and the Cincinnati Museum Center.

While most history focuses on the male leadership of the Movement and their role in moving the country toward racial equality through strategies and tactics including boycotts and demonstrations,  Freedom's Sisters celebrates the involvement of 20 amazing women such as Shirley Chisholm, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Barbara Jordan, Betty Shabazz and Sonia Sanchez.

The programming includes community outreach and educational components.  The exhibit will travel to eight other cities across the United States over a 3-year period.
