The Black Women in Sport Foundation held its 14th Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, April 18th and 19th. Based in Philadelphia, the Foundation's mission is to facilitate and increase involvement of Black women in every aspect of sports both in the United States and worldwide. Over the past several years, the group has developed mentoring clinics for girls and women in eight (8) states for sports such as tennis, fencing and golf. The Foundation has also produced two videos, "Amazing Grace," which features Robin Roberts, and "After the Whistle Blows."
Honored at various events throughout the weekend were golfer Renee Powell, former Negro Leaguer Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, former gymnast Wendy Hilliard and former WNBA player Cynthia Cooper. The weekend also included a sports clinic for more than 300 middle school girls and a VIP reception at the Negro League Baseball Museum.
