"A Legacy of Advocacy"
Since its first meeting in 1881, the American Association of University Women has been a catalyst for change. The AAUW was started at a meeting of seventeen like-minded women who had defied society’s standards by earning college degrees. Originally called the Association of Collegiate Alumna, they organization continues to play a key role and provide guidance and influence in the area of equity in education.
The organization currently has more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 500 college and university partners. Rep. Patsy Mink, one of the key architects of the Title IX legislation, was a member of the AAUW.
As a part of their advocacy efforts, the AAUW issues report cards every five (5) years to evaluate the progress made via the Title IX legislation. It also provides research on issues affecting women including pay gaps, STEM programs and sexual harassment on college campuses.
